A Spark of Inspiration!
Tuesday April 15, 2025 1:30pm - 2:30pm EDT
Get ready for a whirlwind tour through some of the most creative and practical ideas in library services. These lightning talks will take you from the art of reflective teaching to building a library site from scratch, with a pit stop for some graduation portrait fun!

  1. Beyond the One Shot: Cultivating a Reflective Teaching Practice: Many librarians have teaching responsibilities, but not all regularly reflect on their teaching practice. This interactive session will equip teaching librarians with practical strategies to regularly self-assess, collaborate with peers, and gather student feedback - empowering them to continuously evolve their teaching and elevate the student experience. By embracing reflective teaching, librarians can unlock new levels of pedagogical expertise and better fulfill their vital role in student success.
  2. BOOK PROPS & STACK BACKDROPS: Patron Engagement via Graduation-Portrait Photography in the Library: This presentation considers how an academic Library seized a rising tide of graduate-portrait professional photography amidst the stacks as an opportunity to engage with born-digital students’ "Shelf Credibility." The choice to engage rather than prohibit graduation-portrait photo shoots in the library yielded outcomes like both reducing unannounced shoots' disruptions to staff workflows & branding the Library with a new no-cost service using pre-existing resources.
  3. You don't have to be a genius! How I created a library site from scratch in Linux using Google machines, PHP and MYSQL: Some special libraries don’t have their own library site or catalog, and some librarians own personal monographs that they could place online instead. Come learn how I created my own library site from scratch using Wordpress, MYSQL, and Google instances; you don’t have to be a genius to do it!

Hey there! Here are some tips to help you make the most of your time:

  1. BYOD: Hey there! Bring along a device that you can use to edit a LibGuide. I'll have a couple of extras just in case.
  2. Choose a guide or two (especially your own) that you feel could do with a little sprucing up. Don't stress about accessibility - just pick something you can tinker wit
  3. Keep in mind we're all human, and nobody (not even me!) is flawless. Let's have some fun improving these guides together!

It's Fine, I'm Fine, Everything's Fine: Confessions of a First-Year Librarian
Thursday April 17, 2025 1:30pm - 2:30pm EDT
It’s no secret that library school doesn’t fully prepare you for the realities of the profession, and this roundtable discussion dives straight into the heart of it. As a librarian fresh out of grad school, I’ve navigated the stress of job searching, the whirlwind of a brand-new profession, and the challenge of finding my footing in the field.

Entering the workforce and trying to find your place can be daunting. It’s full of emotions and moments of pure panic. I am hoping to provide a safe space for other librarians to share these thoughts, feelings, and even complaints without fear. Moving on from being a student to being a professional brings a rollercoaster of emotions that no one is truly prepared to grapple with. Some move across the country to places they’ve never been before. Others stay local and still face the trials and tribulations of adjusting to their new roles.

Join me as I share my experiences from graduation to (almost) completing our first academic year. This roundtable is more than just my story—it’s an open conversation about the shared struggles and triumphs of early-career librarians, advice from seasoned professionals, and the questions or stories you bring to the table.

As part of the roundtable discussion I want to use music as a way to express our experiences with words I can't seem to find for myself. I ask for participants to think of a song that captures part of your first-year journey - highs, lows, and weird in-betweens.

Let’s spill the tea, break the mold, and build connections (while curating a 10/10 playlist) as we tackle the journey of being a new librarian together.
